Hidden beneath turquoise waters along Australia’s Queensland coast is one of the world’s true natural wonders—the Great Barrier Reef. Join us as we explore this underwater paradise during a six-night voyage to the remote outer reaches of the reef. Cruising aboard the exclusively chartered Coral Princess II, discover a magical world of colorful coral and exotic marine life at locations not accessible to most visitors, and deepen your understanding of the intricacies of reef ecology during a unique educational program led by onboard experts and guides. An optional extension to spectacular Daintree Rainforest, the oldest rainforest on earth, is also available. Offering expert insight into this unique ecosystem is Expedition Leader Joel Simon, a naturalist, expert snorkeler, and marine conservationist.

Daintree, a sprawling coastal rainforest, is home to amazing natural diversity, including more than 400 bird species--13 of which, like the Carroway bird, are found nowhere else in the world. Stay in a deluxe forest treehouse at Silky Oaks Lodge, which adjoins this World Heritage site, and venture into the world's oldest rainforest to search for rare wildlife on foot or by canoe. Explore Mossman Gorge, an idyllic area rich in tropical plants; hike through the mangrove forest at Nadja; enjoy sweeping vistas of broad beaches where the rainforest meets the Coral Sea; and marvel at rare trees and wildlife among the Atherton Tablelands. More information and a detailed itinerary will be provided to registered participants.

Joel Simon

Joel Simon is a marine biologist, naturalist, professional photographer, writer, and expert snorkeler. He has visited more than 100 countries, and over the last 20 years has led more than 150 tours around the globe. Joel offers a wealth of knowledge and a personal passion for the natural world, as well as a hands-on approach to snorkeling instruction and appreciation that will further enrich this experience for each traveler. From his informal style and engaging approach to education to his expert understanding of marine and reef ecology, Joel is an ideal expedition leader for this Great Barrier Reef adventure.

The <em>Coral Princess II</em>

Coral Princess II

The intimate Coral Princess II is an expedition vessel ideally-suited for exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Well-appointed in modern style, the ship offers a casual atmosphere, numerous amenities, excellent cuisine, and personal, friendly service from an experienced crew. The ship can accommodate up to 44 passengers in 23 outside-facing staterooms that include private bath, wood paneling, and individual temperature control. Other features include a swimming platform, snorkeling equipment, a sundeck with spa, a lounge and bar, a reference library, and a glass-bottomed boat for comfortable reef viewing. The ship’s shallow draft allows us to visit remote reefs and to moor very close to ideal snorkeling sites. All water activities are handled with great attention to passenger safety and enjoyment, with an emphasis on hands-on education and appreciation of this natural environment.


Program Rates

Airfare

Airfare between the U.S. and Cairns with return from Sydney to the U.S. is not included in the program rates. In addition, the on-tour flight from Cairns to Sydney is not included. As of October 2007, round-trip economy-class airfare from Los Angeles to Cairns, with return from Sydney, is estimated at $1,995. The on-tour flight from Cairns to Sydney is estimated at $350. These fares are subject to change. High Country Passage is happy to assist you in making individual travel arrangements.
