Along the sun-drenched coasts of North Africa lie the remains of vast ancient cities and archaeological sites that have to be seen to be believed. Following last year's successful trip to Libya, join us on a ten-night voyage aboard the luxurious Le Levant from Athens to Libya and Tunisia. Enjoy a day in Athens at the Acropolis and the Parthenon, and then cruise south across the fabled waters of the Mediterranean, toward the historic Greek colony of Cyrene. Explore six UNESCO World Heritage sites, including vast Leptis Magna, magical Cyrene, and remarkable Sabratha; delve into the complexities of Greek, Roman, and North African history and culture with study leaders and regional experts; and enjoy special privileges, including behind-the-scenes access, private performances, and meetings with local dignitaries.

Enjoy a special guided tour of the ancient sites of Athens and visit the Benaki Museum to see artifacts tracing the culture and history of Greece. For those interested in observing Yom Kippur, there is an option to attend services at a local synagogue and a private kosher dinner to break the fast. A detailed itinerary and pricing will be provided to registered participants.

Achilles Avraamides

Achilles Avraamides is Professor Emeritus in history at Iowa State University, where he developed the program of classical studies in languages. An expert in the history, languages, and religions of Near Eastern civilizations, Dr. Avraamides has taught extensively on the ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, and Byzantium.

Cruise Ship

Le Levant

Le Levant is a superb yacht-like cruise ship built in France and staffed by a 50-person European crew dedicated to outstanding service. The ship carries no more than 90 guests in 45 staterooms, each with a sitting area, private marble bath with shower, and generous storage space. A large picture window affords views of the water and landscape. Public areas include the Grand Salon for lectures and presentations, two restaurants that can accommodate all passengers at one seating, two bars, a library, small exercise room and wading pool, steam room, boutique, and salon. An aft marina features a swimming platform, freshwater shower, and fleet of sturdy motorized Zodiacs.
