Five thousand years ago a major civilization flourished along the Indus River Valley. Since that time, multitudes of peoples have settled and invaded this lovely region to create a remarkable culture that is uniquely Indian. Ethnically Indians speak different languages, follow different religions, and eat diverse varieties of food, all of which add to the rich Indian way of life. The people of India comprise widely varying mixtures of ethnic strains drawn from across Europe and Asia, and practice many religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
India’s diversity extends to its geography. From beautiful beaches to lush rainforests, from dry plateaus to forests and lake regions, from the snow-capped Himalayas to the long Western Ghat chain, every kind of landscape imaginable is represented. India’s three major geographic regions consist of the Himalayas, which form its northern border; the Indo-Gangetic Plain, where the sacred River Ganges flows; and the southern region, noted for the Deccan plateau.
Indians believe in sharing happiness and sorrow. A festival or a celebration is never constrained to a family or a home. The whole community or neighborhood is involved in bringing liveliness to an occasion. Many festivals, such as Diwali, Holi, Id, Christmas, and Mahaveer Jayanthi, are celebrated by sharing sweets and pleasantries with family, neighbors, and friends both old and new.
