South America : Argentina

Main Image

Argentina is a land of both natural and man-made wonders. The second-largest country in South America and the eighth largest in the world, Argentina covers an area of over one million square miles. The country is over 2,000 miles long and only 880 miles across at its widest point. It narrows as it moves southward, and its terrain varies dramatically, changing from tropical jungles and rain forest in the north to majestic Andean peaks that are snowcapped year-round along the spine, and an ever-expanding glacier near its southern tip.

The country can be roughly divided into six geographical zones: the fertile central pampas, marshy Mesopotamia in the northeast, the forested Chaco region of the central north, the high plateau of the northwest, the mountainous desert of the west, and the windy plateaus of Patagonia. Within these areas one can find every environmental feature imaginable, from steamy subtropical jungles to the lofty continental icecap, and just about anything in between.

Beyond the sophisticated metropolis of Buenos Aires, rough-riding gauchos and the wide-open spaces of Patagonia and the pampas, Argentina also possesses jungle waterfalls, colonial cities, fine wines, and vast colonies of Magellanic penguins.
